San Diego Exceeds All Expectations

Over 570 attendees came together in San Diego last fall to network, learn updates on LGBT law, and take advantage of the national LGBT career fair.  As in year's past, over half of the attendees were students who attended career planning workshops and met with over sixty private and public employers.  Response from the employers was enthusiastic, with many reporting that the students were professional, well-prepared and a pleasure to meet.  Similar to last year, recruiters mentioned that it was late in the recruiting season for a career fair and the recruiters were pleased to learn that next year's dates are September 7th, 8th and 9th.  If you are a student who subsequently received a call back, or better yet -- an offer -- from an employer, please contact RClark@sempra.com and let us know about it.

The other half of the attendees were practitioners and judges from a vast array of practice areas including criminal, employment, family law, civil rights, and wills and trusts.  Plenary presentations included a detailed analysis of conflict of laws issues vis-à-vis family law, a spirited debate on the FAIR v. Rumsfeld legal strategy, and an up-to-the-minute analysis of sexual privacy in post-Lawrence case law.

Workshops included beginning and advanced legal education as well as updates on legislative initiatives, tips on practicing public interest law and information about LGBT bar associations.  For the first time in its history, Lavender Law presented a very popular mock administrative hearing featuring an individual servicemember forced out of the military.  This was such a popular program that Lavender Law will be strongly encouraging this type of learning, as well as other non-talking head teaching methods in this year's call for workshops that will be released in a month.

San Diego's Lavender Law was honored to be joined by Ambassador James Hormel, who opened the Conference with his inspirational remarks.  And, NLGLA presented Professor Arthur Leonard, one of NLGLA’s co-founders, with the Dan Bradley lifetime achievement award at the Awards Luncheon on Friday.

Lavender Law recognizes that this achievement is a direct result of the commitment to excellence evidenced by the hard-working and fun team, comprised in the majority, by the Tom Holmann Bar Association.  Thank you so much for your efforts, and thanks especially for the laughs along the way.
